The YCRH at the National NGO Forum for a Canadian Commissioner for Children and Young People

On July 10 and 11, different representatives from a number of non-government organizations came together in Moncton, New Brunswick to talk about the need for a Canadian Commissioner for Children and Young People. My co-chair, Alicia Raimundo and I, represented the Young Canadians Roundtable on Health at the event. Over the course of six hours, we discussed: What should or could the role of the commissioner be? Who else should be sitting at the table? What is the plan of action we all need to contribute to in order to make this work? What would it change?

News Release: The fourth annual World’s Largest Sandbox

OTTAWA, June 10, 2015 – Canada’s leaders are playing in the sandbox to build a healthier generation of Canadians.  In order to raise awareness about The Sandbox Project, Canadian Members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, media personalities, NGO’s, families and industry professionals built sandcastles in the World’s Largest Sandbox event on Sparks Street in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Many Canadians would be surprised to know how badly we fare when it comes to the health and wellbeing of our children. Canada faces an unprecedented future where our children have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. With a specific focus on injury prevention, mental health, growing healthy bodies and the environment, The Sandbox Project is working hard to counteract this worrying trend and improve child and youth health and wellbeing in Canada. The objective of the World’s Largest Sandbox event is to raise awareness of the importance of collaborating and investing in child and youth health issues.

Clearing the Air Summit: We can make tomorrow a brighter day

the YCRH’s Stephanie Bertolo shares her 2015 Summit experience

On May 5th, World Asthma Day, I attended the second annual Clearing the Air Summit hosted by the Asthma Society of Canada. The full day event, attended by leaders of government, industry, academic and non-profit organizations was most certainly an enlightening experience, providing a unique perspective on the impacts of climate change. Commonly, when people give presentations on global warming, there is a strong fixation on the effects on the natural environments: increased natural disasters, decreased biodiversity, rising temperatures, and the likes. Though at the Clearing the Air Summit, they focused instead on exposing the harsh realities of global warming’s impact on human health.

Young worker safety is everyone’s responsibility

This spring, members of the Young Canadians Roundtable on Health were given the opportunity to attend training sessions offered by Aecon Group to be educated about workplace health and safety. From the beginning it was very clear that we were learning from people who are experienced in the field of injury prevention and passionate about building a safety culture in the workplace. I was particularly impressed with the amount of resources dedicated to workers’ safety through initiatives such as the Young Workers Program and routine Safety Moments.

Clearing the Air: the 2nd Annual Conference of the Asthma Society of Canada

The Asthma Society of Canada announces its 2nd Annual Clearing the Air Summit

The Asthma Society of Canada is holding its Second Annual Conference on May 4th and 5th, 2015 at the Courtyard by Marriot Downtown in Toronto. By bringing together leaders from government, industry, academia, and the not-for-profit sectors, they will examine asthma and respiratory allergies in a time of climate change and issue a call-to-action for decision makers.

Clearing the Air is an opportunity to demonstrate that health and the environment are inextricably linked. Asthma and allergies, including both the social and economic impacts of climate change on respiratory health demand more attention from policy makers and the public.

The Asthma Society of Canada is pleased to announce the keynote speaker will be the Honourable Glen Murray, Ontario Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.
